Day 2, IVCO 2024

Afternoon How-to Workshop: Changing relationships for a world in crisis

September 11, 2024

Building on the discussions of the first day, breakout sessions on Day 2 will invite delegates to explore the different ways we can think about solidarity. We will provide time and space to reflect together on what we mean by solidarity, where it might already be present in our relationships and how the process of asking questions might help us to strengthen it further.

In this How-to Workshop, speakers will focus on strengthening delegates' technical knowledge and building their capacity in evidence gathering, practical project design and management, and impact pathways, focusing on the needs and challenges of the volunteering and development sector.

Moderators: James O'Brien (Forum) and Marie Claude-Mercier (IBCR)

  • Speaker: Tonje Polden Steinsland (Norec)
  • Title: “Unlocking potential: How alumni networks empower development”

This workshop will explore how alumni networks can be a game-changer for both volunteering organisations and former volunteers themselves. There is often a wealth of knowledge and skills in these networks just waiting to be harnessed. We will look at how the network of the Norwegian Agency for Exchange Cooperation (Norec), with over 1900 members in over 80 countries, has used alumni expertise for interpreting, training support and data collection. Engaging alumni for in-depth interviews years after their exchanges has provided valuable insights into the long-term impact on careers and life choices. Beyond the organisational benefits, the network fosters a vibrant community of global citizens. Members can share knowledge, collaborate on projects, and discover new opportunities to advance their own professional and personal development. This workshop will provide practical examples and strategies for leveraging alumni networks to enable both organisations and volunteers to achieve greater impact and personal growth.

*Four different modalities of breakout sessions have been designed to amplify diverse voices and promote opportunities for delegates to share their experiences in engaging ways during IVCO 2024.
