Katy Jenkins is a Professor of Global Development and co-Director of the Centre for Global Development at Northumbria University, UK. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on women’s activism and volunteering; gender and large-scale resource extraction; Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), professionalisation and the changing nature of civil society. She is committed to working in partnership with development NGOs, and grassroots and community organisations, with a particular focus on feminist and participatory approaches and creative methodologies, including visual methods. Her research has been funded by research councils, charities and NGOs.Recent collaborative projects include RECLAMA: Harnessing Afro-Ecuadorian Women’s Heritage (https://proyectoreclama.wixsite.com/reclama), with the ‘Mujeres de Asfalto’ collective and San Francisco de Quito University, visibilising the knowledge of Afro-descendant-black women in Ecuador, and opening up spaces for transmission of their rich cultural heritage; and Volunteering Together (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/blended-volunteering), with VSO, exploring how different types of volunteering come together and their what kinds of impacts and development outcomes this produces, and for whom. Katy will be acting as moderator for different sessions during IVCO 2024.
