Fiachra Brennan

Solidarity and Capacity Development Coordinator - Comhlámh

Fiachra Brennan is one of the co-organisers of IVCO 2024. He is the Solidarity and Capacity Development Coordinator for Comhlámh, the Irish Association of Development Workers and Volunteers. In this role, he oversees the Comhlámh Code of Good Practice for Volunteer Sending Agencies, collaborating closely with a network of over 50 organisations to promote values-led international volunteering. Fiachra is dedicated to nurturing innovative forms of engagement that are rooted in solidarity, while also working to eliminate harmful practices and challenge neocolonial and ethnocentric approaches to international volunteering. A key aspect of Fiachra’s work is the Comhlámh End Orphanage Volunteering Campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the negative impacts of orphanage volunteering and the institutional care of children. His efforts are pivotal in advocating for ethical volunteering practices and highlighting the need for systemic change. Fiachra holds a Master’s degree in Social Justice and Public Policy, bringing a strong academic and professional background in international volunteering, policy development, and advocacy to his role. His commitment to fostering ethical engagement and promoting social justice underscores his impactful contributions to the field, as he strives to ensure that international volunteering is beneficial for both communities and volunteers alike. Fiachra and Dervla King will be presenting on “Comhlámh’s Code of Good Practice and ways of working collaboratively” in a How-to Workshop Session during the IVCO 2024 Conference.
