Caroline is Chief Executive Officer of Comhlámh, the Irish Association of Development Workers and Volunteers. She has over 18 years’ experience across the Irish international development and development education sector, with a focus on research, policy, safeguarding, activism, and global citizenship education. Her work is grounded in critical and participatory pedagogies, drawing on Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, with a PhD exploring applied theatre as a practice for engaging with injustice, power, and social transformation. This interest in embodied and dialogical learning informs her commitment to education as a space for critical reflection, solidarity, and collective action. Caroline’s practice spans development education, facilitation, and advocacy, with a particular interest in arts-based and experiential approaches that deepen emotional and ethical engagement with global justice issues. She is especially interested in how learning processes can surface lived experience, challenge structural inequality, and support more equitable and inclusive forms of participation. At Comhlámh, she leads work that supports values-led volunteering, solidarity-based engagement, and reflective practice within Ireland’s international development community.
